Newcastle Photograph Gallery
Newcastle was founded by the Roman Emperor Hadrian. It developed as a strategic castle location in the wars between England and Scotland, and later as one of the key centres of the industrial revolution. Its nineteenth century wealth was based on shipbuilding and coal. These industries have now declined, being replaces by banking, service and retail employment. The River Tyne and its bridges are one of the most attractive features of the city, and are pictured in the photographs in this gallery.
