Hackfall, near the village of Grewelthorpe, and close to Masham was hailed by nineteenth century visitors as one of them most beautiful woods in the country. It was developed by William Aislabie, owner of Fountains Abbey, and painted by Turner. Now owned by the Woodland Trust, over £1million has recently been spent on restoration.
